Royal Sonesta Houston

Royal Contract Lighting is pleased to be a part of RoyalSonesta Hotel Houston’s $25-million renovation, which is slated for completion by the end of 2013. The hotel’s 485 guest rooms, 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space, rooftop swimming pool, lobby, and food and beverage outlets are all part of the project.

The award-winning Dallas-based design firm, Looney &Associates, was tasked to transform the building with an urban chic style fueled by Houston's leadership position in energy, medicine and space exploration. The resulting design scheme is a dynamic mix of Texas attitude, international flair, and innovative technology.

The sculptural, star-like light fixtures designed by Looney and Associates and crafted by Royal Contract Lighting, reflect the urban-chic concept as well as a distinct shift in the style of hotel lighting toward one-of-a-kind, show-stopping designs.

Each Sonesta fixture is composed of several overlapping curved stainless steel “skeletons” finished in polished nickel. The frames are outfitted with flexible arms and LED lights.

Mounted to each flexible arm is a hand-formed, Venetian-style glass ribbon in a gold and champagne finish. Hundreds of these S-shaped ribbons adorn each chandelier.

During installation, 4,000 glass elements were hand-mounted onto the flexible arms and individually positioned, creating a series of light sculptures on the ceiling.

“The hotel’s interior design will encourage our guests to look at Houston from a different point of view,” says General Manager Monte Hansen. “Many aspects of the renovation, from the sculptural light fixtures to the contemporary lobby and guest room art, reflect the influence of science and technology [in Houston].”

Trump SoHo, New York, NY

The Trump Soho New York hotel is a dramatic, 46-story, 391-guest room tower overlooking one of Manhattan’s most exciting neighborhoods. Designed by Handel Architects, the 450-foot tower is clad in a silver glass curtain wall, providing unparalleled views of the city. The interiors, which were designed by the Rockwell Group, reflect the “rich and raw” SoHo environment with a blend of glass, leather, wood and metal.

Royal Contract Lighting was brought in to refurbish the lighting in the 4,000 square foot SoHo Ballroom. One of three event spaces in the hotel, the Ballroom is a simple contemporary room that accommodates 400 guests and boasts floor-to-ceiling windows for natural daylight. In the evening however, the space was lit only with ceiling cans, and lacked the sophisticated elegance found throughout the rest of the hotel.

SoHo Ballroom before new lighting installation

In order to make the SoHo Ballroom more attractive for weddings, corporate events and fundraisers, Trump SoHo management contacted us to develop elegant new lighting fixtures for the space. Royal Contract Lighting had graced the Trump International Hotel and Towers Toronto with public space and guestroom lighting in 2012, and the Trump  corporation was very pleased with results.

Dressing the chandeliers with thousands of crystals.

We were commissioned to design, fabricate and install six fixtures for the SoHo Ballroom which would fit into existing ceiling niches and six matching wall sconces. The 8-foot square fixtures also needed to be in scale with a 13’ ceiling height.

Lobby chandeliers
Glass plays a key role in the hotel’s design with its outer glass building envelope, translucent glass interior walls, and sculptural lobby chandeliers. Royal Contract Lighting designed a tiered flush-mounted crystal chandelier with textured glass panel trim that complements the lobby fixtures.

We fabricated the chandeliers and sconces at our Taunton facility, managed the installation process, and “dressed” the chandeliers with 130,000 crystal pieces on site.

The twelve shimmering new fixtures capture the contemporary beauty of the hotel and add the Trump glamor to the SoHo Ballroom.

Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

Royal Contract Lighting is pleased to be a part of the $25 million renovation of the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. Architect/design firm Stonehill & Taylor made a 'locavore' statement in both concept and product selection for the Hyatt, using elements that reference Minnesota's culture and native industries, and sourcing the majority (80%) of the design products within North America.

"We are proud to complete a project of this size and aesthetic quality with the majority of it made in North America," said Michael Suomi, principal and VP interior design at Stonehill & Taylor. "We didn't just want to evoke localization through décor and culinary choices. We wanted to show that we can in fact have our hotel work make a difference by maximizing impact on the local economy and minimizing environmental footprint."

The emphasis on eco-friendliness, including local sourcing and social sustainability, is gaining momentum in the hospitality industry worldwide. The Hyatt Regency Minneapolis project served as a case study for designing locally at a large scale with demonstrable results, including shorter delivery times, a budget on par with sourcing abroad and an expanded collaboration by designers with American industries.

The design team, together with purchasing agents The Stroud Group, worked hard in developing new products with domestic manufacturers to meet the design criteria. "Our work is the result of our tireless search for superior materials, furniture and decorative items from the region that fit our design vision" said Suomi. The pieces chosen represent the best of local craftsmanship, while giving the design a sophisticated, artistic edge.

Royal Contract Lighting was commissioned to manufacture three types of public space fixtures for the Hyatt Regency's new ballrooms and meeting rooms.

Nineteen modern floating ring fixtures, ranging in diameter from 4 feet to 7 feet, were developed with an internal reflective LED strip. This unique lighting technique creates a "halo" effect at the bottom of the fixture.

For a second ballroom, Royal Contract Lighting created stunning cloth shade chandeliers clad in gold organza, measuring 8 feet in diameter.

The third public space called for a contemporary steel and crystal lantern fixture. Manufactured with laser cut ribs, a gold finish and more than 10,000 pieces of 30% lead crystal, each lantern measures 10 feet in diameter and 4 feet in height.

Royal Contract was also selected to provide on-site installation management and assistance. Since they were to be installed as part of a renovation project, the challenge was to manufacture all of the fixtures so that they could be brought into the building and transported to the sixth floor in a standard-sized service elevator. Royal Contract's engineering department designed the fixtures to be manufactured in small sections and assembled on-site.

To stay within the client's budget parameters, Royal Contract also used innovative strategies to reduce shipping costs from Massachusetts to Minnesota. The fixtures were manufactured and packaged in sections that would make the best use of space in domestic shipping containers, reducing the number of containers needed from five to two.

True Food Kitchen

Simple, pure flavors, seasonal local and regional ingredients, and great tasting food that's good for you. When Dr. Andrew Weil and Sam Fox of Fox Restaurant Concepts opened True Food Kitchen, they did so with a two-fold mission: every dish must not only be delicious, but it must promote the diner's well-being. All True Food Kitchen locations feature dishes that closely adhere to the principles of Dr. Weil's anti-inflammatory diet.

True Food Kitchen is intended to be a new kind of restaurant: one in which delicious flavors, healthy nutrients, environmental awareness and an inviting atmosphere come together to create an unforgettable dining experience.

Royal Contract Lighting was commissioned to create custom, giant drum shade fixtures that complement the "green" design of True Food Kitchen restaurants. Each drum shade is 8 feet in diameter and clad in authentic ash wood dyed veneer. The shades were manufactured in our Massachusetts facility and now grace True Food Kitchens in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Newport Beach, San Diego, Santa Monica and Denver.
